Dengue e outros arbovírus transmitidos por mosquitos: diferentes impactos na saúde humana nos dois lados do Oceano Atlântico

Resumo

De entre os arbovírus transmitidos por mosquitos, o vírus da dengue (DENV) é aquele que maior impacto exerce sobre a saúde humana. Com uma distribuição condicionada pelas condições ambientais que determinam a dispersão do seu principal vetor (Aedes aegypti), a conquista geográfica deste vírus tem sido imparável, sendo facilitada pela dispersão de Ae. albopictus. O DENV pode infetar um número estimado em cerca de 400 milhões de pessoas por ano, e em muitos destes indivíduos a infeção poderá evoluir para situações clinicamente graves. As consequências deste vírus na saúde Humana não são, no entanto, simétricas no contexto geográfico, sendo amplamente negligenciado em África, praticamente desconhecido na Europa continental, mas afetando a saúde de milhares de pessoas um pouco por toda a Ásia e América Central e do Sul. Não obstante, este não é o único arbovírus que afeta negativamente a saúde Humana. De ambos os lados do oceano Atlântico o vírus do Nilo Ocidental é o flavivírus com maior dispersão geográfica conhecida, enquanto o vírus chikungunya ganha cobertura geográfica a cada ano que passa. Assim, e tendo em conta a forma dinâmica como estes vírus condicionam a saúde das populações, a vigilância da sua atividade e o controlo dos seus vetores devem ser reforçados.
