O ENSINO EM SAÚDE PÚBLICA NO INSTITUTO DE HIGIENE E MEDICINA TROPICAL DE LISBOA, 1902-2012
Abstract
This art icle presents a summary descript ion of the long t radition and evolut ion of Public Health educat ion at the Inst ituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT) that has emerged from an integrated act ivity of the teaching offer at the School of Tropical Medicine and at the subsequent inst itutes. That collaborat ive offer remained for over a century and resulted in a teaching act ivity grounded in a st rong research agenda, which grew through courses for masters and doctoral programs, and through a wide range of courses for development assistance, oriented to public health as a collect ive act ion to develop the condit ions that promote healthy life in the communities we live in. This collect ive act ion is implicated in what public health does better: assessment of the health status, the organizat ion and management of health programs and services, the development of human resources for health, health promotion and the intervention in specific populations. The mult idisciplinary group of teachers and researchers of public health in IHMT has been in the forefront of works in priority health problems, but also in influencing health policies in the Portuguese and internat ional contexts, part icularly in many African countries (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique), as well as in international organizations, namely the EU, WHO (the only WHO Collaborat ing Center in Portugal for health workforce, policy and planning), the World Bank and CPLP.
